Man's Chief End: To Glorify God

I hear this phrase all the time, but what does it really mean to "glorify God?"

Awhile back I heard a sermon (from Will Pavone at Frontline) on the glory of God, and I think it's related. I'll post some of my own thoughts on your specific question later...but for now, chew on this:

Ok- here's my comment:

I liked the definition Will used (see the sermon link I posted) for what the glory of God is, "God's glory is the beauty of all His infinite perfections, including His eternal character and His divine attributes."

So, since we are made in the image of God (Gen 1:26)to glorify Him would be to reflect back His glory. Using the sun illustration, He "shines" His glory to us and we, being mirrored images, reflect it back to Him.

I think the problem comes in when our "mirror" bodies are broken and caked with sin making it impossible for light to bounce back.

Sorry it's taken me so long on this guys. I really liked Sarah’s thoughts. Here are mine:

"So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Cor 10:31) This verse implies that even the most mundane of human actions brings God glory. Glorifying God is our purpose, it’s why we were created.

As Christians how do we bring God glory? At a subconscious level, just being alive brings God glory! But, consciously we can bring glory to God as well. The verse that comes to mind is Rom. 12:1-2 which says, "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worhship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect."

An interesting thing to think about is how this concept relates to the lost. Those who are without Christ either have no clue about what their purpose in life is, or they are wrong about what their purpose is. Something that is sad/amusing is to ask people (lost) what is their purpose in life. It’s scary some of the answers you will get! I do believe that even those who are apart from Christ bring glory to God because the whole earth is full of his Glory (Ish 6:4). It is hard to imagine God’s glory being filled in the world but somehow “skipping” over the non-believer. Somehow God elicits glory from the most vile of sinners, and that is amazing!
